3 Reasons People Don’t Start Writing Their Book:

Hey there, fellow writers and aspiring authors! Have you ever found yourself putting off writing your book, waiting for just the “right” time to start? You’re not alone. So many people dream of writing a book but never quite get around to it. But here’s the thing: if not now, when?

Today, I thought to myself, “If not now, then when??”  I am at a pivotal point in my career where I either stay in my job as an assistant professor in a graduate program OR…I step into my own advice and step fully into my writing.  So this is me doing my NOW.

I want to share a story with you that really hit home for me. I had a favorite physician I worked with who I often invited to be a guest on my podcast. He was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about his field, and I knew he would have so much to offer my listeners. But he kept putting me off, always saying he was too busy or didn’t have the time.

Then one day, at the age of 54, he passed away suddenly. It was a devastating loss for everyone who knew him. Later, I was talking with a colleague who said something that really stuck with me. She said, “I would give anything to have Dr. B’s voice on that podcast talking about something he loved, his medicine.” It was a powerful reminder of just how fleeting life can be and how important it is to seize the moment.

So why do so many people procrastinate when it comes to writing their book? Here are the top three reasons:

  1. Fear of Failure:One of the biggest reasons people put off writing their book is fear of failure. They worry that their writing won’t be good enough or that no one will want to read it. But here’s the truth: the only way to improve as a writer is to start writing. Embrace the process and know that every word you write brings you one step closer to becoming a better writer.
  1. Perfectionism: Another common reason people procrastinate is perfectionism. They want their book to be perfect from the start, so they keep putting off writing until they feel ready. But here’s the thing: no book is ever perfect, and waiting for perfection will only hold you back. Embrace imperfection, and know that you can always revise and refine your work later.
  1. Lack of Time: Finally, many people put off writing their book because they feel like they don’t have enough time. But the truth is, there’s never a perfect time to start writing. Life will always be busy, and there will always be other demands on your time. Your writing won’t happen until you make time for it to happen. (Unless you hire a ghostwriter, haha!) The key is to make writing a priority and carve out time for it in your schedule, even if it’s just a few minutes a day.

So what is the best way to change your mindset and start writing your book today? Here are a few tips:

  • Set realistic goals: Instead of waiting for the perfect time to start writing, set realistic goals for yourself and stick to them. Whether it’s writing for 10 minutes a day or completing a certain number of pages each week, having clear goals will help keep you on track.
  • Embrace Imperfection: Remember that your first draft doesn’t have to be perfect. Give yourself the freedom to produce a ‘rough first draft’ and remember, you can always polish and refine your work later.”
  • Make Writing a Priority: Finally, make writing a priority in your life. Carve out time for it in your schedule and treat it like any other important commitment. The more you prioritize writing, the more progress you’ll make.

Will you find the time to start your book? I sure hope so! I believe in the power of storytelling and the transformational power of writing.

So there you have it, friends—the time to start writing your book is now. Don’t wait for the perfect moment; seize the moment and start writing today. Ask yourself, “If not now, then when?”.
